Despite AFCON loss, Rabiu reaffirms $500,000 reward for Super Eagles

Billionaire industrialist and Chairman of BUA Group, AbdulSamad Rabiu, has reiterated his commitment to fulfilling the $500,000 cash pledge he made to the Super Eagles, despite the team’s exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Nigerian team bowed out of the tournament after losing 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco, following a goalless draw in their semi-final clash at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

In a message shared on his official Instagram page on Thursday, Rabiu praised the Super Eagles for their resilience, courage and determination throughout the competition, noting that the players had made Nigerians proud despite falling short of the ultimate prize.

“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud,” he wrote.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, the BUA chairman said football outcomes do not always reflect the level of effort invested, stressing that the passion, unity and fighting spirit displayed by the players were worthy of celebration.

“Sometimes, even our best efforts don’t bring the outcome we hope for, but the spirit, passion and unity you displayed are what truly matter. You left everything on the field, and that is worthy of celebration,” he added.

Rabiu confirmed that the $500,000 reward earlier promised to the team would still be honoured, describing it as a token of appreciation for their hard work, dedication and the excitement they brought to Nigerians during the tournament.

He had announced the incentive ahead of the competition as part of efforts to motivate the Super Eagles in their quest for continental glory.

The Super Eagles’ run to the latter stages of the tournament earned widespread praise from fans across the country, even though they ultimately fell short of reaching the final.

Rabiu encouraged the players to remain focused and optimistic, expressing confidence that the experience gained from the tournament would translate into greater success in future competitions.
