Deputy Comptroller of Lagos Correctional Centre redeployed for staging beauty pageant
The Deputy Comptroller of Prisons in charge of the female section of the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Kirikiri Lagos, Mrs Lizzie Ekpendu, has been redeployed.
A source who does not want his name disclosed, said the comptroller was redeployed to the Lagos Command Headquarters, Alagbon, Ikoyi.
But some Nigerians alleged that the transfer was done following the recently conducted beauty pageant.
The event conducted in the female section of the correctional centre was won by a murder suspect, Chidinma Ojukwu.
The winner was the prime suspect in the murder of Super TV CEO, Michael Usifo Ataga.
She was crowned Miss Cell 2022 at a beauty contest organized by the prison authorities to celebrate International Women’s Day early this month.
The event was condemned by so many Nigerians and organizations, who pointed out that the act was a celebration of evil.
Chidinma was reported to have stabbed Ataga to death after they both checked in to an apartment in Lekki, Lagos.
She allegedly fled the crime scene but was apprehended by the police alongside other suspects.
Reacting to the allegation, the Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Correctional Centre, Chief Superintendent Rotimi Oladokun, said the transfer had nothing to do with the beauty pageant as it was not the first time such an event would be held.
Oladokun explained further that Ekpendu had just concluded a course at the command’s staff college Ijebu Igbo and had to be promoted to a higher level just like her colleagues.
Oladokun said the male correctional unit also organized a similar programme as part of efforts to rehabilitate inmates.
