The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mohammed Baba Azare, on Wednesday led a public sensitisation campaign at Itam Market, one of the state’s busiest commercial hubs, to mark the third day of the 2026 National Police Day.
The exercise, themed around promoting civic responsibility ahead of the forthcoming electoral season, focused on two key areas: saying no to electoral violence and strict adherence to road traffic rules and regulations.
Addressing a large gathering of traders, transport workers and residents, Azare emphasised the importance of maintaining peace before, during and after elections. He urged citizens to reject all forms of political violence, thuggery and hate speech, particularly as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections, noting that democracy thrives when the will of the people is expressed without fear or intimidation.
“Elections are not wars; they are a civic exercise to choose leaders. I urge every resident of Akwa Ibom State to see themselves as ambassadors of peace. Do not allow yourselves to be used as instruments of violence by desperate politicians. Your vote is your power—protect it without bloodshed,” he said.
In addition to electoral peace, the commissioner stressed the need for strict compliance with traffic regulations. He noted that a significant number of accidents and fatalities in the state are caused by reckless driving, overloading and disregard for traffic signs.
He urged commercial drivers and private vehicle owners always to prioritise safety, especially as the state prepares for increased movement during the election period and the approaching rainy season.
The sensitisation exercise, which involved senior police officers and command personnel, featured the distribution of educational materials, including flyers and pamphlets, to market stakeholders.
Officers also conducted an on-the-spot awareness walk through the market, engaging directly with traders and commuters. The exercise was simultaneously replicated by Divisional Police Officers in their respective areas of responsibility.
DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer, said the 2026 National Police Day celebration continues with activities aimed at strengthening ties between the police and the community.
She, however, stressed that the grand finale would be held on 7 April 2026 at Eagle Square, Abuja, and urged residents to participate in subsequent events nationwide.
