Court jails man 16 years for rape

Idorenyin Udoh Umoh, a 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 years in jail for rape and assault.
Umoh was said to have repeatedly raped a 17-year-old girl in Utu Ikpe Village, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
It was gathered that the victim was always scared whenever she saw the convict as he had forcefully had sex with her severally.
It was learnt that in the latest incident before the convict was arrested, he had accosted the girl who accompanied her friend to pick some mango fruits behind their family compound in Utu Ikpe.
Umoh was said to have threatened the two girls who ran away, but he chased after his victim into a bush and after hitting her on the head with a stone, overpowered her and raped her in the bush.
Subsequently, he was arrested on May 25, 2022, in Utu Ikpe, and prosecuted by the state through the Ministry of Justice.
In his ruling, Hon. Justice Charles Ikpe of Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Ikot Ekpene found Idorenyin Umoh guilty of rape and assault and sentenced him to 14- and two years’ imprisonment for rape and assault, respectively.
