The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Gov Godwin Obaseki winner in the 2020 governorship election in Edo State.
Obaseki scored 307,954 against 223,619 secured by his closest rival and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
The Returning Officer of the commission, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, announced the result of the election on Sunday.
Rim-Ruke, while declaring Obaseki winner, stated that the incumbent governor was returned elected after satisfying all requirements in line with the law.
Incumbent Governor Obaseki of PDP ran against APC standard-bearer Ize-Iyamu and 13 others.
It will be recalled that Obaseki was elected on APC’s platform in 2016 but defected to the PDP after being denied the ticket owing to intra-party squabbles.
Meanwhile the governor has commended the Edo people for his re-election, describing it as ‘triumph over godfatherism.’
“Words fail me in saluting our teeming supporters, who displayed immense courage in the face of threats, intimidation, and brutalisation.
“The collective will of Edo people made it possible for us this triumph over godfatherism. Congratulations to Edo people,” he said.
