Senator Bassey Akpan, representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, on Monday, declared his intention to contest for the office of the Governor when he consulted the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Uyo

Akpan urged the party to provide a level playground for all aspirants to test their popularity in the forthcoming primaries of the party.

He advised that for the party to stand a better ground of sustaining its unity, the party’s primaries should not be manipulated for a particular candidate.

“I thank you the Chairman of the party for this great opportunity. At some point, some of us were beginning to lose faith in the party but, God that your actions in recent times have given us hope.

“I am here today to notify the party that I will be taking part in the forthcoming primaries in Akwa Ibom State and that God should touch the heart of the party to do the right thing by providing a level playground for all aspirants.

“God brought you to this party in such a time like this and I believe you will do that which is only pleasing to Him because time will come when you will be called upon to give an account of your stewardship,” Akpan said.

The Governorship aspirant said he has no problem with Governor Udom Emmanuel as it was wrongly painted on social media, accusing the governor’s aides of being the brain behind those lies.

Akpan challenged other aspirants to show how many graduates from the state they have sponsored in school, stressing that under six years he had sponsored 439 graduates in his constituency and beyond.

He said that his governorship ambition is laced with the possibility of transforming the state, particularly through agriculture, to boost food sufficiency.

Akpan vowed to complete both the abandoned and the ongoing projects, adding that it would be an inclusive government that will take care of the critical needs of the people.

In his remarks, the State Party Chairman, Mr Aniekan Akpan assured that the party will provide a level playground for all aspirants so that the true winner would become the sole candidate of the party.

The party chairman urged all aspirants to avoid politics of bitterness and hatred, adding that they should comport themselves with the spirit of sportsmanship.
