ABU alumni association in Akwa State gets new executive council

The Ahmadu Bello University Alumni Association in Akwa Ibom State has elected a new executive council to run its affairs in the state.

The election, which was held on Monday at the premises of Akwa Ibom Hotel and Tourism Board, Uyo, saw Comrade Dominic Akpan emerging the State Chairman by defeating Ms Mercy Bassey, Acting Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government Council, and Dr Teddy Essien.

Elected alongside Comrade Akpan were Mrs Eno Charles, Vice Chairman; Comrade Itoro Effiong, Secretary; Barr. Kufre Umoh, Assistant Secretary; Mr Asuabiat Udoh, Financial Secretary, and Mr Kufre Uyoh, Publicity/Social Secretary.

In his acceptance speech, Comrade Akpan, who is also the State Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, thanked everyone for the demonstration of goodwill and unwavering determination to reposition the Alumni Association in the State.

He promised to run an inclusive government that will merge the wise counsels of the elders with the energy of the youth.

“We will put in place the necessary structures for the EXCO to take off smoothly, organise a reunion, leverage on the massive contacts outside Akwa Ibom State, among other things,” Comrade Akpan said.

Earlier in his remark before the election, the Deputy National President of ABU Alumni Worldwide, Alhaji Adamu Kontagora, said that the election was for the good of the Akwa Ibom State branch.

Alhaji Kontagora commended everyone for shelving their engagements to participate in the election.

Present at the election were Prince Uwem Essien, a retired head of the legal department of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC; Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Ini Adiakpan; Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Hotels and Tourism Board, Obong Ini Akpabio; former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dominic Ukpong; Prof. Ini Jonah, of the University of Uyo.

Others were, Barr. Gloria Etim, Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Eket; Mr. Eugene Archibong, retired principal of the school; Arc. Ini Ukpong, among others.

Before his election as Chairman, Comrade Akpan had served the association as State Secretary and later, Publicity and Social Secretary in the Caretaker Committee.
