The Anambra State Police Command has arrested Chima Ofoeke in connection with the suspected killing of 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area.
The victim’s mother reported her missing to the Divisional Police Officer of Umuchu Division after she had been missing since October 16, despite efforts to locate her.
Police operatives, acting on intelligence and working with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, arrested Ofoeke, whom police described as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.
The police said that during preliminary questioning, Ofoeke allegedly confessed to killing Umeorini after their relationship ended. He then led detectives to a location where her remains were found and recovered.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday.
An online video also showed the suspect describing the breakup and leading security operatives to the location where the remains were found.
Commissioner of Police Nnanna Ama has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a thorough investigation. The command said it would provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
