The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) faces intense scrutiny following the deaths of several suspected illegal miners held in custody after enforcement raids across Niger State on 15 and 16 September 2026.
Responding to the fatalities, Commandant-General Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi established a high-level investigative panel, led by the Deputy Commandant-General for Intelligence and Investigation, to determine the full sequence of events.
The panel will investigate key aspects of the incident: The suspects’ physical condition upon arrest; the length and conditions of their detention; the timeliness and adequacy of medical care provided; and the immediate circumstances leading to their deaths
The remains have been transferred to the General Hospital in Minna for post-mortem examinations to pinpoint the precise cause of death.
The Corps confirmed it is collaborating with health authorities and partner security agencies to ensure standard medical and public health protocols are met.
Dismissing reports attributing the deaths to specific illnesses, the NSCDC stated that all claims remain purely speculative pending laboratory results.
Prof. Audi directed that the health and safety of all remaining detainees be prioritised immediately, along with protective measures for personnel who made contact with the deceased.
Extending condolences to the bereaved families, the Corps pledged a fully transparent, evidence-based investigation, reaffirming its commitment to curbing illegal mining while upholding fundamental human rights.
