A’Ibom police intensify statewide traffic enforcement
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has vowed to sustain the full enforcement of traffic laws across the state, warning that motorists and other road users who violate traffic regulations will face appropriate legal sanctions.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has vowed to sustain the full enforcement of traffic laws across the state, warning that motorists and other road users who violate traffic regulations will face appropriate legal sanctions.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the enforcement drive was aimed at protecting lives, preventing avoidable road crashes, maintaining order and promoting responsible road use across Akwa Ibom State.
John said the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, had expressed concern that, despite repeated public enlightenment campaigns and sustained enforcement efforts, many road users continued to disregard traffic regulations, endangering lives, damaging property and obstructing the free flow of traffic.
She identified common violations as driving against traffic, excessive speeding, reckless and dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the use of covered, concealed or defaced number plates, illegal parking, overloading, and disregard for traffic signs and signals.
Other offences, she said, include the use of mobile phones while driving and violations of designated routes by tricycle and motorcycle operators.
John said the statewide traffic enforcement operation remained in force and would continue without interruption.
She added that police officers had been directed to ensure strict compliance with relevant traffic laws while carrying out their duties professionally, fairly and firmly.
“Anyone found violating traffic regulations will be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law,” she said.
She noted that vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles used in committing traffic offences could be impounded where necessary, while offenders would face the appropriate legal sanctions.
The police spokesperson advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles were properly registered, roadworthy and adequately documented.
Drivers were also urged to obey speed limits, observe traffic signs and road markings, avoid dangerous overtaking, refrain from driving against traffic and comply with lawful directives issued by traffic enforcement personnel.
John said the enforcement exercise was not intended to punish law-abiding citizens but to protect lives, prevent needless deaths and injuries, maintain order on the highways and promote a culture of responsible road use across the state.
She appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement officers by obeying traffic regulations and reporting reckless or dangerous driving to the nearest police station or relevant security agency.
The police spokesperson stressed that compliance with traffic laws was essential to ensuring safer roads and reducing preventable road crashes.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and said traffic regulations would be enforced professionally, impartially and without fear or favour.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and every road user has a duty to contribute to making Akwa Ibom roads safer,” John added.
