Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) says it is deploying digital technology to strengthen its campaign against piracy and protect intellectual property rights in Nigeria.

The Director-General of the commission, John Asien, disclosed this in Uyo on Tuesday during an event marking the 2026 World Intellectual Property Day.

World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April to promote awareness of the role of intellectual property in encouraging innovation and creativity.

Represented by the NCC Coordinator in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Cornelia Ibanga, Asien said the commission’s anti-piracy drive would be strengthened through collaboration with relevant national technology-based institutions.

He noted that unauthorised streaming of live sports content continues to undermine legitimate markets, discourage investment and weaken the creative economy.

“NCC has intensified its enforcement efforts to combat digital piracy and related infringements,” he said.

According to him, leveraging the provisions of the Copyright Act 2022, the commission is deploying modern enforcement mechanisms to tackle illegal streaming, cable piracy and unauthorised public exhibition.

He explained that these efforts are part of the broader National Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy, which aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Asien said the policy provides a structured framework for strengthening the creation, protection and commercialisation of intellectual property across critical sectors of the economy.

He further noted that Nigerian youths continue to demonstrate remarkable talent and global competitiveness, stressing that such potential must be translated into sustainable economic benefits through effective intellectual property protection.

The NCC boss urged young Nigerians to gain adequate knowledge of intellectual property rights and strategically position themselves to commercialise their creativity, innovation and talents.

In her remarks, the Staff Adviser of the Intellectual Property Society, University of Uyo Chapter, Ms Enobong Etuk, said the celebration reflects the institution’s commitment to establishing a physical office for the society.

Etuk added that beyond academics and innovation, sports remain a powerful tool for youth empowerment, engagement and self-reliance.
