LASG shuts Mile 12, Owode Onirin markets
The Lagos State government has shut down the Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market over non-compliance with environmental laws.
Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Jubril Gawat, said this on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday.
The statement read, “Acting on the directives of Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, enforcement operatives from LAWMA and KAI, in a joint operation in the early hours of Friday, October 13, sealed up the Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road in Kosofe LG.”
He stated that the decision to seal up the markets is due to indiscriminate dumping and burning of refuse, filthy environment, and blocked and littered drainages.
According to Gawat, the menace of illegal and indiscriminate parking and the abandonment of trucks on major roads, thereby impeding the free flow of traffic, are also reasons for the closure.
The Lagos State government has been closing down some popular markets for environmental offences for over one week now.
Among the markets closed down are Ladipo, Oyingbo, Alamutu Ologede and Ile-Epo.
However, some of the markets have since been reopened after meeting the requisite conditions.
