The chairman of Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mr Wasiu Adesina, on Monday asked market stakeholders to engage in continuous environmental sanitation and adhere strictly to COVID-19 protocols.
Adesina said this during an inspection of the ongoing construction of drainage and road surfacing at Sabo market, Ikorodu.
The chairman was accompanied on the inspection by the council’s environmental sanitation officials who also engaged the traders in cleaning their surroundings.
He said: “The drainage and road construction will allow free flow of water, especially during the rainy season and allow traders to transact their business in a clean environment.
“Sabo market is the biggest market in Ikorodu, so we need to give it more priority to retain its standard.
“Traders should compulsorily use of face masks to flatten the curve and reduce the spread of COVID-19.”
Adesina added that his administration would continue to conduct fumigation for a cleaner market environment against predators, reptiles, and other dangerous animals.
Iyaloja of Ikorodu, Chief Mrs Taofikat Allynson, praised the chairman and advised all traders to obey government policy and ensure the market environment remained clean against germs.
Allynson noted that a committee would be set up to enforce the use of face masks and proper monitoring of the weekly sanitation exercise.
“We are going to put sanitisers in all the strategic locations of the market as a way of reducing the spread. “We will also appoint committee members that will be enforcing the use of face masks before anyone can be allowed to transact business in the market,” she said.
