Two female adult passengers of a commercial bus with number plate KTU 198 XN were killed in a multiple accident when the bus they boarded was trapped by three trucks that rammed into one another.
It was learnt that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA received a distress call around 9.55pm on Tuesday about the accident and dashed to the scene together with other stakeholders/responders.
A statement by the LASEMA’s head of public affairs, Nosa Okunbor, on Wednesday, noted that upon arrival at the scene of the accident, it was discovered that a multiple accident that involved a tipper truck with number plate AKM-741ZT; another tipper truck with number plate AKM- 322 ZT; a loaded tanker with number plate U-779 XZ, and a loaded 40ft containerized truck with unknown number plate, crushed a commercial bus with number plate KTU 198 XN.
The statement read, “The bus was extricated open with the aid of the agency’s light rescue equipment where six adults (3 males and 3 females) and a child were rescued alive with different degree of injuries and were given first aid treatment by the agency’s paramedics before they were taken to Gbagada General Hospital by LRU ambulance and LASAMBUS; unfortunately two adult female passengers lost their lives at the scene of incident.
“However, a joint team of responders coordinated by LRT (Cobra and Eagle base), LASAMBUS, LRU ambulance, Nigeria Police (Pedro division), LASG fire service, LRU fire unit and LASTMA rescue worked together at the scene of incident.
“The dead victims were bagged by the LRT and handed over to SEHMU at the scene of incident while the accidented vehicles were recovered off the road with the aid of the agency’s heavy-duty equipment (Supermetro and light tow truck) and handed over to the Police officers from Pedro Division.”
The statement recommended that in order to prevent/mitigate against similar incident in future, truck drivers should ensure they move within the required speed limit when on highway; Hi-tech construction company should place a more visible diversion signage 200 metres before the diversion point along Anthony inward Gbagada.
