A truck heading to Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Tuesday around 6.22 a.m., crashed into the water at Itowolo, approximately 1.2 km from Ikorodu.

The truck driver was said to have survived the crash unhurt and escaped for fear of being attacked for destroying goods worth millions of naira.

Policemen were seen around the accident scene to forestall any possible breakdown of law and order.

Ms Yetunde Oloruntade a building materials dealer, whose shop was destroyed, said the truck swept underneath the water her container with goods worth millions of naira in it.

She said: “The accident happened around 6.22 am. The truck damaged the container with goods inside. We have not seen the container or the goods. The driver of the truck fled the scene of the accident.

“The truck also damaged some furniture and part of the furniture shop. Two personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority were here; they did not do anything.

“The goods which were in the container are building materials, soft drinks, and some furniture. Nobody was killed in the crash.”

A furniture maker, Emeka Osuji, said the chair the truck destroyed costs an average of N100,000. He added that it would take large sums to repair the areas of the shop the falling truck damaged.

“The chair is around N100,000. The areas of the shop the truck destroyed have to be repaired. I can’t estimate the cost of repairs. I’m not the one to repair it, it is the work of the carpenter; so, he is the one who can tell how much it will cost to replace those things the truck had destroyed.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said since the policemen were at the scene of the accident, they would do something to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
