Transport fare: Court orders lady to pay N150,000 over refusal to visit boyfriend

A court in Enugu State has ordered a lady to pay N150,000 for collecting N3,000 transport fare from her boyfriend and refused to visit him as promised.

The Lady in the middle is in the court after she was arrested by the Nigerian Police Force, Enugu State.

The lady, who was arraigned in the Enugu Magistrates’ Court was ordered to pay her boyfriend, Emeka Nwankwo the sum of N150,000.

It was learnt that the lady, Chinasa Nwibeh collected the N3,000 as transport fare from Emeka to visit him but, thereafter, switched off her mobile phone.

The boyfriend was said to have gone to a nearby police station and reported the case, which led to Nwibeh’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.

The court, having listened to the case, ruled that the lady should pay N100k,000 with additional interest and another N50,000 for emotional damages because the boyfriend was emotionally abused by the absence of the girlfriend.

The boyfriend, Nwankwo produced evidence in the court of the mobile money transfer made to her and all the WhatsApp messages they shared.

The judge in her ruling said the judgement was passed to serve as a deterrent to ladies who indulge in such a stupid act.

The case was shared by a lawyer known on Twitter as @egi_nupe, who said the magistrate awarded damages against the lady to serve as a deterrent.

He wrote; “A court in Enugu has reportedly set a good precedent by awarding damages of 150k against a lady. She was given 3k as transport fare to visit a guy and after collecting the money, she switched off her phone and refused to visit him. Infuriated by her action, he reported and sued her for deceit.

In the judgement, the magistrate held that the lady’s action was deceitful and awarded the sum of 150k against her to serve as deterrence to others with such deceitful behaviour.”
