Residents lament over dilapidated primary school in Lagos community

Residents of Igbe in the Igbogbo Local Council Development Area, Ikorodu, Lagos State, are disturbed by the state of Local Government Primary School, Igbe.

According to them, as the rainy season has almost set in, classrooms in the already repaired classroom blocks will be stretched as pupils and teachers are likely to move to areas rain may not disturb them.

It was observed that parts of the school are deplorable; the areas where classroom blocks were erected, had collapsed giving way to overgrown weeds and trees.

Our correspondent reports that pupils were seen walking in the bush without fear of being bitten by snakes.

An indigene, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, stated that the school is the only public primary school around Igbe.

He said: “I have two children in that school. I’ve been warning them not to go near the overgrown areas for fear of being bitten by snakes or stung by scorpions.

“The functional classrooms have been overstretched. Now the rainy season is approaching; some classrooms and windows in the so-called functional classrooms are licking and windows were broken.”

Another resident, who described himself as Ayo, described the state of the school as pathetic. She added that if they had money, they would not have allowed any of their children to attend public schools.

She noted that the action of the government regarding the maintenance of public property is unbecoming.

A pupil, who identified herself as Bimpe, said she would like the government to repair the schools for them so that they can have more classrooms and bushes cleared so that they can learn and play in the open spaces.
