The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has tasked 2021 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members to ensure they add value to their employers and contribute to development of the host communities during the service year.
The Akwa Ibom Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Chinyere Ekwe, gave the task on Monday during the Passing Out Parade ceremony of the corps members at the Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung in Nsit Atai Local Government on Monday.
Ekwe charged the corps members to make good use of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme fashioned toward providing skills for them to be self-reliant.
The state coordinator said that the SAED programme was designed to equip corps members in various skills acquisition to make them self-sustenance after service.
“I would like to appeal to all corps members to accept their postings in good faith. Settle down and work towards adding value to employers and the transformation of your host communities through Community Development Service engagement,” Ekwe said.
The state coordinator warned corps members against unauthorised journeys, and appealed to them that if permitted to travel, they should avoid night journeys.
According to her, the management of the scheme would not hesitate to discipline erring corps members to avoid unforeseen consequences.
Ekwe said that the posting of corps members was done in compliance with the government’s directive, adding that about 95 per cent of the corps members were posted to schools across the state.
“Let me warn again that unauthorised journeys are seriously frowned upon. And if permitted to travel, you must avoid night journeys. NYSC cannot afford to lose any of her corps members through road mishap anymore,” she said.
The coordinator commended Gov. Udom Emmanuel, governor of Akwa Ibom and the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Monday Uko, for the support in infrastructure development in the orientation camp.
She thanked the camp officials for their unflinching support throughout the orientation exercise and admonished corps members to be law-abiding, disciplined and security conscious during their sojourn in the state.
