NYSC coordinator tasks corps members on self reliance, patriotism

Akpan Umoh

The Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Julius Amusan, has charged the 2019 Batch C Stream 1 corps members to be self reliance and remain patriotic in their future endeavour.

Amusan said this in an interview with newsmen in Uyo on Thursday to mark the passing out ceremony of the corps members after the compulsory one year service.

He charged the outgoing corps members to make use of the lessons they have learnt during the service as their guiding principles.

The state coordinator urged corps members to use the knowledge acquired from Skill Acquisition and Enterpreneurship Development (SAED) to develop themselves and be self reliance.

He reminded the corps members to be patriotic and enhance the unity of the country in their conduct and utterances.

“Life after service may not have presented a rosy picture, especially in this global pandemic and dire unemployment, but the courage and resilience the corps members will put into it matters a lot.

“The various skills you have been exposed in the last one year would serve as a launching pad to overcoming immediate challenge, as you go into the labour market,” he said.

Amusan said that as 2, 282 corps members were passing out, eight of them would have to face extension of service from one to four months for misconduct.

The coordinator expressed regret that during the service year under review, the scheme lost three corps members.

Amusan said that due to the coronavirus pandemic, corps members would collect their discharge certificate from their different local government areas.

He commended some corps members for their exemplary behaviours, adding that they conducted themselves within the ambit of the law and lived up to the ideals of the scheme.

The state coordinator said that some of the corps members were able to impact positively to the community during their primary assignment.

Amusan thanked the traditional rulers, state government and security agencies in the state for the security of corps members posted to the state.

He appealed for more of such, adding that residents should always see corps members as partners, who were in the state to serve their father land.
