The Ikorodu Local Government Area in Lagos State has begun construction of two side drainages and road surfacing at Sabo Market to enhance commercial activities in Ikorodu.
The chairman of the Ikorodu LGA, Mr Wasiu Adesina, said that the project is expected to be completed in four weeks.
“This administration has been delineating on various projects that will benefit the public and determined to fulfil promises made as Continuation of my last tenure agenda.
“Many of our completed projects are evident in the communities around Ikorodu LG area, among them are construction and reconstruction of roads, clearing of drainages, desilting, and health care.
“Provision of covid -19 packages to the needy, regular sanitation exercise, small/medium scale empowerment programme and various educational promotions,” he said.
He added that the flagged off project was the beginning of the provision of an outline for the market people to ensure rapid development in infrastructure, sanitation, and good health.
Adesina said the construction of drainages would create good channels for free flow of water, prevent blockages and serve as a means of cleaning the environment, especially during the rainy season.
He urged market men and women to pay their levies promptly so that the council can embark on more developmental projects and always keep the environment clean to prevent airborne and other transmitted diseases.
The chairman said that the market would be handed over to the Iyaloja to ensure proper maintenance so that the market can last long.
He said: “This is an important market in the history of Ikorodu and Lagos State at large.
“Maintenance has been the habit of people so we will hand over the market to the Iya Oloja for proper maintenance,” the council boss said.
Also speaking is the IyaOloja of Ikorodu, Alhaja Taofikat Allynson, who commended the chairman for his kind gesture, and promised to maintain the project when completed for market use.
Allynson appealed to the chairman to also construct parking spaces for trucks bringing goods and foodstuff to the market for easy transloading and distribution of their product.
“As we can see the chairman has been doing great in terms of infrastructural development, but we are Oliver Twist because we need a park for trucks.
“Most times trailers find it difficult to park and drop items for our businesses,” Allynson said. Mr Wasiu Shotomiwa, the councillor, who facilitated the project commended Adesina for listening to the yearnings of his constituency and promised to organise a maintenance team to monitor the project.
