The former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the New Nigerian Peoples Party.
Senator Shekarau represents Kano Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
Senate President Ahmed Lawan announced the defection at the plenary after a closed-door meeting of the Senate on Wednesday.
The former Kano State governor hinged his decision to quit the APC on unfair treatment by Gov Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State.
He said: “I am defecting from the APC to my new party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party as a result of unfairness, injustice by Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
“For the past two years there has been an unresolved crisis in Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, hence, I have resigned my membership.”
The defection of Shekarau to the NNPP is believed to have strengthened the new party ahead of the 2023 general election.
