The 2 Brigade Nigerian Army has engaged its host community in Mbiokporo in a football tournament as part of activities marking Exercise Still Waters II.
The match was played between Team 2 Brigade and Young Stars Academy at Willington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa in Abak Local Government area in Akwa Ibom on Sunday.
The match which ended 1-1 apiece at the end of 90 minutes, saw the Young Stars Academy defeat the Team 2 Brigade 5-4 through a penalty shoot-out
Speaking to newsmen after the match, the Commander, 2 Brigade Garrison, Lt.-Col. Usman Adamu, said that the match was part of the army’s strategy to promote the civil-military relationship.
Adamu added that the military was encouraging synergy with the civil population that would lead to good cooperation while discharging its official security duties.
The commander, 2 brigade garrison noted that the tournament was part of the exercise still waters II activities which commenced on Oct 2 and will last till Dec. 22.
“We just finished a very interesting football match which is part of the Brigade’s civil-military activities of Exercise Still Water II.
“In line with the Chief of Army Staff vision and directive to the 6 Division, Port Harcourt, these activities are civil-military activities lined up for the brigade to cement the relationship with a civil population not just for Exercise Still Waters but so far as we remain here in Uyo.
“Well, the Team 2 Brigade lost out in the tournament. It does not feel too good and at the same time, it does not feel too bad.
“In line with the spirit of sportsmanship, there are times to lose and win. As far as sport is concerned, we can bear losses like this, but in terms of duty proper, we don’t lose,” Adamu said.
He added that activities marking exercise still water by 2 Brigade Nigerian Army would continue to last till December 22.
