Dowen College shuts down over student’s death

The management of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, has shut down the school following the death of a 12-year-old student Sylvester Oromoni.
Oromoni died after allegedly being tortured for refusing to join a cult group in the school, his parents said.
In an email sent to the parents and guardians, the management asked students to stay at home on Friday, December 3 and Monday, December 6.
“In view of the current situation concerning the school and considering the emotions of our students, we have advised that our students stay home tomorrow Friday 3rd and Monday 6th,” the email read.
The school added that the break would allow students to revise for their forthcoming examinations starting next week.
The incident has since generated outrage from the public, with many calling for the closure of the school.
Oromoni had mentioned before his death five boys who attacked him.
But the school management, in a statement released on Thursday, said Oromoni had complained of pains in the hip on November 22 after a football match but felt better after medications were administered at the school’s sickbay.
It insisted that the school does not condone cultism.
