A’Ibom Assembly asks govt to commence renovation, reopening of Ibom Plaza

Plaza

The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the State Government to direct relevant government ministries and agencies to commence the renovation and re-opening of Ibom Plaza for public use.

The resolution was sequel to a motion by the member representing Uyo State Constituency, Mr Uwemedimo Asuquo, on Thursday at plenary.

The motion was seconded by Mr Asuquo Nana, a member representing Ikono State Constituency in the House of Assembly.

Asuquo had explained that Ibom Plaza located at the State Capital was constructed with a state-of-the-art facility for business and recreational purposes during former Gov. Victor Attah’s administration.

The lawmaker expressed displeasure that since 2012, about 600 shops and stalls at the plaza have been abandoned which had caused the people to resort to roadside trading within the plaza and its environs.

He said that the abandonment of this government facility which served as a recreational and tourist centre where people within and outside the state used to visit, relax and do business, had cost the state some losses in internally generated revenue.

He added that this government facility could have been attached to the hospitality and tourism sector.

The Speaker, Mr. Udeme Otong directed the clerk of the House, Mrs. NsikakAbasi Orok, to communicate the resolution of the House to Gov. Umo Eno for action.

Meanwhile, the House has adjourned plenary to reconvene on Sept. 21
