The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has at its plenary considered a motion on urgent need to rid the premises of former Uyo main market of miscreants.
The motion which was moved by Mr Anietie Eka – PDP member representing Uyo state constituency in the House of Assembly under matters of urgent public importance.
Eka in his motion on Tuesday noted that the former market was presently a breeding ground for armed robbers, rapists, and other nefarious activities.
The lawmaker raised concern over the fate of unsuspecting members of the public, who are victims of constant harassment.
Eka, in his prayers called on the state government to sanitize the entire area and get rid of all the hoodlums.
He said that the hoodlums disguised as hawkers and traders around the popular Ibom Plaza during the daytime but revert to their devilish activities at night.
He urged security agents to live up to their responsibilities by identifying and apprehending the culprits.
The House member called on the State Government to work with the Nigeria Police Force to evict the miscreants from the market.
In his response, the Speaker, Mr Aniekan Bassey, referred the motion to the Joint Committee on Environment, Youths, Sports and Security for in-depth study and to report back to the House within one month.
Also at plenary, the Akwa Ibom State Anti-Stigma and Discrimination of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS Law 2020 sponsored by Mr Udeme Otong – PDP member representing Abak, passed through second reading and was committed to the House Committee on Health for further legislative study.
The House has adjourned Plenary to to reconvene on Tuesday, October 6.
